Revolutionizing Wayfinding: OCT Happy Hour by updesign

Corbusier's Modernist Architectural Style Transformed into Wayfinding Signs

updesign, a renowned design team, has brilliantly incorporated Corbusier's modernist architectural style into their latest project, OCT Happy Hour. This innovative design, which has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award, is set to redefine the wayfinding signage system in a park-themed residential area.

The OCT Happy Hour project was inspired by the demonstration area of a large park-themed residence. The design team at updesign extracted Corbusier's architectural language and ingeniously incorporated it into the wayfinding-sign design on landscaping belts and entrance paths. This innovative approach has transformed the area into a local culture center, providing a more 3D space experience through the strategically placed wayfinding signs.

What sets this design apart is the unique way Corbusier's architectural language has been expressed in the wayfinding-sign design. The bold, rough appearance is characterized by exaggerated crude concrete components and exposed unfinished structures. The cool shadows of heavy metal materials produce artistic 3D visual effects, conveying a powerful sense of minimalism.

The realization of this design required a high-standard cement material and qualified finishing craft to achieve a smooth but rough looking surface of the sign board. The result is not just a sign board, but a lively artistic building epitome that echoes with its grand architectural background. The overall texture of the concrete sign board measures 1700mmX200mmX680mm.

updesign's wayfinding signage system integrates man, architectural space, and design aesthetics as a gentle friendly whole. The design team, led by creative director Zhang Yi and project manager Zhang Shuo, faced the challenge of maintaining a consistent visual effect between the colors of sign boards and existing building facades. After numerous selections and experiments, they achieved minimal color tolerance through repeated communication and coordination with the construction team.

The OCT Happy Hour project was completed in September 2021, in the Northwest lishui District, Nanjing city, Jiangsu Province, China. It is a testament to updesign's commitment to innovation, aesthetics, and functionality, as evidenced by the Silver A' Design Award it received in 2022.
